Portadown 2nd XI

Date: 30th June 2007 at Chambers Park
Toss Won By: Portadown

At Chambers Park on Saturday Saintfield gained their third league win out of four to maintain their aim of promotion this season. Given the overnight rain and cloudy overhead conditions it was no surprise when on winning the toss Ports captain Paul edgar asked Saintfield to have a bat. The wicket was very lively with deliveries rising sharply of a lenght making it difficult for batsmen ever to be comfortable at the crease.

Saintfield welcomed back veteran Alan McCaughtry to open the innings along with Paul Mullan. This pair survived early hostile bowling and quickly set about the Portadown opening pair of Whitfield and the impressive James Edgar. With the score on 44 in the 7th innings Mullan (23) drag one on from a wide delivery and was bowled. Gareth Harrison and McCaughtry then took the score to 61 before Harrison(12) was adjuged to have gloved one and was out to an acrobatic catch by wicketkeeper O'Hara. McCaughtry(17) followed a short while later with the score on 66. Teenagers Dean Gordon and Craig Boultwood had put on 19 for the fourth wicket, when first ball after drinks Gordon (14) was bowled by Hoyle. Brian Hall joined Boultwood and vice captain Hall looked in a determined mood and punished any wayward bowling. With the score on 124 he lost Boultwood(9) caught at mid-wicket, mistiming a pull shot. Al Glover and Hall put on 32 in a 6th wicket stand however were dismissed in the same over by the lively Edgar, Glover for 17 and Hall for a well fashoned 30. Trevor Long 24 not out batted well and was still there at the end as the Saintfield innings closed on 205 for 9 off their 45 overs.

With the ball Saintfield struck early on. 16 year old Ross Boultwood has been in irrepessable form all season and the Portadown top order found his pace and bounce impossible to deal with. Boultwood picked up 2 wickets in his first 3 overs for no runs. Gareth Harrison also got in on the act as Saintfield had Portadown rocking at 15 for 4. Haddock was then joined by Hoyle and this pair set about repairing the damage. Haddock in paticular was agressive in his style Hoyle was more determined and patient. Saintfield knew breaking this partnership was vital and the breakthrough came when the wily Nowotarski tempted Hoyle to advance down the track only to be stumped by the alert Glover. Saints skipper Barry Mullan who bowled an excellent line and lenght all afternoon picked up 3 quick wickets to really put the game beyond Portadown. The came was concluded with Portadown on 141, when Glover added his second stumping to three his catches to dismiss Haddock (97) and give Saintfield a 64 run victory.
