Ards 2nd XI

Date: 27th May 2007 at The Demense
Toss Won By: Ards

Following their defeat away to Holywood last Saturday, Sainfield's 2nd XI showed their bouncebackability with an emphatic 9 wicket victory against Ards at The Demense on Sunday. Winning the toss Ards elected to bat, a decision they were soon to regret as wickets fell regularly throughout their brief 23 over innings in which they could only muster 75 runs. Star man for the Saints was young Matthew Norton who bowled with great accuaracy and rythm to pick up 4 wickets for a mere 5 runs in his 5 over spell.

Norton ripped through the Ards tail to follow up on the good work that openers Ross Boultwood and Gareth Harrison had started. Boultwood who this season is bowling with great pace and desire had both openers A Conway (0) and Osbourne (5) back in the pavilion early. Not to be out done Gareth Harrison also picked up two wickets having the aggressive McClements (17) caught by Norton in the covers and I Conway (1) was dismissed by a sharp Paul Mullan catch at short extra cover. the only man to provide any real resistence was P Thompson, who unlike his teammates showed patience. But Thompson was unable to find a partner who was willing to stay with him, as Norton removed them one after the other. The Ards innings closed on 75 when that man Norton held onto his second catch of the afternoon at point to remove Thompson, who had batted well for his 23.

With a small total to chase captain Barry Mullan took the oppourtunity to experiment a little and at tea asked his older brother Paul to open the innings with Saintfield veteran Alan McCaughtry. Both took a while to settle, until McCaughtry played a few of his trademark unconventional agressive strokes to kickstart the run chase. With the score on 35 McCaughtry attempted another aggressive stoke only to miss and was bowled by Patterson for 18. Gareth Harrison joined Mullan and this pair finished the game in the 16th over Harrsion unbeaten on 14 and Mullan 34 not out.

Saintfield will be hoping for a similar high quality all round display when they entertain Dundrum at home in the cup this Saturday.
