Donaghadee 2nd XI

Date: 19th May 2006 at Seapark
Toss Won By: Holywood

Saintfield II XI travelled to Holywood for their first game of the season on Saturday. Captain Barry Mullan took a strong squad and was hopefully of victory, however from a strong position of 80 for 1 in the 17th over, Saintfield failed to capitalise as batsmen came and went too frequently and finished on 160 all out in the 40th over. Despite a good start and picking up three early wickets for 29 runs, the experience of Adair and Tracey put on 96 for the fourth wicket to take the game away from Saintfield and allow Holywood to gaina five wicket victory.

Saintfield started well with Gareth Harrison and Alan McCaughtry putting on 45 in the first 10 overs, before Harrison (23) was bowled by one that moved of the seam from McMaster. Paul Mullan joined McCaughtry and was quite happy to play second fiddle to McCaughtry who was finding the boundary with some big shots. Unfortunately McCaughtry(38) went for one shot too mant and skied one to mid off, which Adair held onto. Conor Patterson (1) played a poor shot and became first victim to Murray's slow off spin. Paul Mullan rode his luck on a couple of occasions as he and Brian Hall put on 23 before Hall (11) got one that nipped back between bat and pad. Mullan's luck eventually ran out when he played inside the line and was bowled by Murray for 33. With the score on 121 for 5 and with 20 overs left Saintfield were still in a reasonable position to post a decent total. However poor shot selection and a lack of application lead to wickets falling at regular intervals and the Saintfield innings closed on 160 all out in the 40th over.

Saintfield opening bowlers of Harrison and Ross Boultwood struck early, Harrison had Hanif (1) caught by Simms in the covers and bowled Wood(1). Boultwood roughed up Murray(16) with a couple of short pitched deliveries before producing an unplayable inswinging yorker to knock his leg stump out of the ground. At 29 for 3 saintfield knew they were well in the game, however Adair and Tracey were in determined and patient mode and batted very sensibly in their stand of 96. The partnership was eventually broken at 125 when Adair (54) was run out. Conor Simms had McMaster (12) caught by Boultwood at mid-wicket, however that was to be Saintfield's last success, as Tracey (47no) and Purcell(15no) guided Holywood home with six balls to spare.

This was a disappointing start to the season for Saintfield's 2nd XI and they will now need to put a string of results together to ensure they are in a position to challenge for promotion at the business end of the season.
