Dungannon 1st XI

Date: 22nd July 2007at The Demense
Toss Won By: Saintfield

On Sunday Dungannon travelled to The Demense for the second time in two days as their home ground was unplayable they agreed to forfeit their home advantage to enable the fixture to be played. On this occasion Saints skipper McBriar won the toss and elected to have a bat.

Richard Owens who effectively was on a ‘pair’ after his golden duck on Saturday, managed to reach 4 before he edged one to Dungannon’s stand-in wicketkeeper Michael McNamee off Ferguson’s bowling. Ray McCavery (22) was looking in good shape as he and Clegg put on 37 for the second wicket, however he was walking back to the pavilion for the second time over the weekend caught behind. Gareth Harrison again played some superb shots down the ground and had reached 29 before becoming the third Saintfield batsman to edge one to the keeper with the score on 116. Noel David joined Clegg in a bid to up the run rate however the tactic failed when David was bowled around his legs by Lucas for just 8.Boultwood(4) came and went cheaply as Maurice Clegg who was looking steady tried to push the score along. Clegg had batted well for 85 when he tried to follow up one six with another only to be caught on the boundary by Forsythe of the bowling of Adrain in the 45th over. Saintfield lost Murray (8), Wheeler (7) and Viner (4) as they attempted to push the total beyond 200, nevertheless when innings closed the total was exactly 200 with McBriar unbeaten on 8 and Mark Yeates finishing with another ‘red ink’ on 6 not out.

With Dungannon missing Steven Kelly and the influential Dougherty Saintfield hoped 200 would be enough. Yeates struck early to remove Adrain (5) caught at mid on by Clegg. The second wicket fell with the score on 21 when Craig Boultwood picked up a good catch low down off the bowling of David to remove Brown. Meeke played the anchor role, as Kelly had done on the Saturday, however like Kelly, Meeke was unable to find a partner to stay with him and help build an innings. Meeke reached 49 before holing out to Harrison on the boundary. None of the other Dungannon batsmen reached double figures as Phillip Murray collected 3 for 31 off 9 overs and was the pick of the Saintfield bowlers. Birthday boy John Wheeler wrapped things up bowling Lucas (0) in the 38th over as the Dungannon challenge fell 74 runs short.

Saintfield travel to Larne this week and will have to adapt to a wicket that won’t be as quick and true as The Demense wicket. Captain Mark McBriar will ask his troops to show application with bat and ball in order to keep their promotion push on course.
