Larne 1st XI

Date: 10th June 2007at The Demense
Toss Won By: Saintfield

Saintfield continued their winning start to their Section 3 campaign on Sunday at home to Larne with a 95 run victory, to make it 4 wins out of four in league this season. Played in beautiful conditions on hard and fast track Saintfield skipper Mark McBriar elected to bat when he won the toss.

Saintfield openers Richard Owens and Maurice Clegg got of to a steady start putting on 70 for the first wicket, the partnership was broke in the 21st over when Owens mistimed a drive and was caught by Moore at mid on off the bowling of McClean for 38. 20 more runs were added before Ray McCavery (10) was run out and Clegg (38) followed with the score on 91 when he holed out to long on off Gaw's left arm spin. At 91 for 3 the game was finely balanced, however Byron Woodruff and Saintfield's player coach Noel David set about the Larne attack with some attacking strokes and some excellent running between the wickets. David reached 50 in 25 balls as the Saints began to take the game away from Larne. Woodruff (21) was dimissed in the 35th over after an inside edge onto his pads hit his stumps with the score on 181. The dismissal of Woodruff did not deter David who continued to be agressive and found the boundary regularly. His quick fire 44 ball innings ended 3 short of 100 when he hit one straight up and was caught at mid on. Gareth Harrison (27), Phillip Murray (22) and John Paine (22no) all made decent contributions as the Saintfield innings closed on 289 for 8 when Phillp Murray was bowled with the final ball in the 50th over.

McBriar continued his good early season form with the ball and picked up two early wickets as Larne struggled to 22 for 2. Mark Yeates also got in on the act trapping Dempsey(4) leg before as Larne limped to 27 for 3 in the 10th over. D Hodge and A King then set about the Saintfield innings aggressively and put on 84 for the fourth wicket with some unconventional batting strokes. The introduction of David's off spin soon reaped rewards and he removed both the Larne dangermen, King for 53 and Hodge for 38. David went on to complete a memorable display and collected 5 for 44 off 8.1 overs. Saints skipper McBriar brought the Larne innings to a close at 194 in the 40th over with a sharp piece off fielding to run out Gaw, to give Saintfield a 95 run victory.

Saintfield entertain local rivals Dundrum at the Demense this Saturday. Both sides go into the game with a 100% record, however something will have to give this weekend in what is sure to be a keenly contested encounter.
