Laurelvale 1st XI

Date: 26th May 2007at The Demense
Toss Won By: Saintfield

Saintfield slumped to a 10 wicket defeat in the 2nd round of the TCH Down Democrat Senior Cup on Saturday at The Demense. Winning the toss Saintfield skipper Mark McBriar elected to bat on what looked a good batting track. In spite of this there was a bit of help in the wicket early on and combined with cloudy overhead conditions the Laurelvale openers managed to move the ball around. As the day wore on the though any help in the pitch disappeared and it became a batsman's paradise.

The Saintfield innings got off to a dreadful start when they lost in form opener Richard Owens for a duck. Maurice Clegg was joined by Tommy Stewart. This pair took the total to 21 before Stewart(10) swung and missed at a straight ball and was bowled by Burns. Ray McCavery, man of the match in the previous round against Ballymena, came to the crease, he and Clegg set about trying to repair the damage. However against an accurate Laurelvale attack the progress was painstakingly slow. The pair put on 80 for the 3rd wicket before Clegg (47) was caught by Pearson of the bowling of Burns. After this partnership Saintfield struggled to build another as wickets began to fall at regular intervals. The Saintfield innings closed when Ross Boultwood (3) was bowled by Wylie in the 49th over. The pick of the Lauerlvale bowlers was Wayne Pearson who returned figures of 4 for 17 off his 10 overs.

The Saintfield dressing room felt at tea that if they managed to get a few early wickets they stood a chance. However no matter how hard the Saintfield bowlers tried they could not get the breakthrough. Mark McBriar had a couple of good appeals for leg before against Man of the Match Paul McCrum. McBriar, Mark Yeates and Johnny Viner also beat the outside edge on a couple of occasions. Nevertheless the McCrum brothers remained and when the chance arose showed why they are both former Irish internationals, anything short was quickly dismissed, any delivery too full was driven with great power and accuracy. Charles McCrum finished on 70 not out and his brother Paul finished unbeaten on 66 as Laurelvale reached 162 in the 32 over.

Paul McCrum was presented with the Man of the Match trophey for his all-round display with bat and ball. Saintfield will need to re-group and focus their full attention on the league, starting with this Saturday away to Donaghcloney.
