Drumaness 1st XI

Date: 12th May 2007 at Drumaness
Toss Won By: Drumaness

Saintfield travelled to Drumaness on Saturday for their second league fixture of the season and came away with a comprehensive 10 wicket victory. Winning the toss Drumaness captain, Alan McCoubrey, elected to bat. This was a decision he possibly regretted early on as Saintfield's opening pace attack of McBriar and Yeates picked up early wickets as Drumaness struggled on 25 for 4. Former Dundrum wicketkeeper Alister Glover, making his first team debut for Saintfield, snapped up three of first four wickets with sharp catches behind the stumps. Former Saintfield player Darren Oldroyd then came to the crease and Oldroyd was ruthless in punishing any loose deliveries as he quickly raced to 16, before Phillip Murray got one to nip back between bat and pad to bowl Oldroyd. Alan McCoubrey and Brendan Gelston came together at 46 for 6 and showed the younger members how to do it as they put on a stand of 89. McCoubrey hit 45 including 8 x 4's and 1 x 6 before getting a leading edge and being caught and bowled by David. Drumaness' final wicket fell in the 50th over with the score on 160 when McBriar had Gelston (48) caught in the gully again by David.

On a damp wicket and with conditions overcast Saintfield knew that application with the bat was important. Richard Owens and Tommy Stewart were given the task of getting Saintfield off to a good start. Owens, who has returned from Muckamore this season, showed that his two seasons in Section 2 have undoubtably improved him as a player. Owens shot selection and ability to score his runs on the ground have improved beyond recognition. Added to this Owens encouraged and cajoled Stewart into action as Drumaness struggled to get the breakthrough. Owens reached his 50 in the 22nd over and Stewart wasn't to far behind reaching his 50 in the 24th over. Once both these milestones were reached Owens and Stewart quickly knocked off the remaining runs with Owens hitting the winning runs with a six to finish on 72 no with Stewart unbeaten on 73, giving Saintfield a 10 wicket victory.

Saintfield travel to Dungannon this week without the services of Owens or Byron Woodruff. Mark McBriar will be looking for those selected to come in and do a good job and leave him witha selection headache for the Senior Cup second round match versus Laurelvale on the 26th.
