Portadown 1st XI

Date: 28th April 2007at The Demense
Toss Won By: Saintfield

Saintfield entertained Section 3 newcomers Portadown at The Demense on Saturday in the first game of the 2007 season. Despite a good pre-season including wins versus North Down II’s and Muckamore, Saintfield got off to a poor start having elected to bat first on a great track. The Portadown bowlers bowled a tight line and length early on and Saintfield struggled to accumulate runs with wickets falling at regular intervals.

However with the score on 70-5 Saintfield’s Player Coach Noel David, who had just arrived in the country at 9.15 that morning having spent the previous 36 hours travelling, wearily dragged himself to the crease. From the off David struggled to run, continually cramping up due to tiredness. Given this it appeared David decided the only way to score runs was via the boundary and he ripped into the Portadown attack. In no time he reached 50 and quickly accelerated to 100 before being caught on 124 an innings that include 10 x 6’s and 11 x 4’s. David received support from Byron Woodruff who chipped in with 45 as the Saintfield innings closed on 269 in the 44th over.

The Portadown batsmen showed the same application and determination as their bowlers. The openers Henry and Morrison were patient and waited on the bad delivery and as a result had Portadown 50 without loss in the 16 over, when David held onto a good catch of the bowling of Woodruff to remove Henry (11). Morrison was then joined by Harris and this pair took the score to 94 before Morrison (66) was bowled by David. Harris (20) followed a short time later caught in the covers by Ross Boultwood of the bowling of Johnny Viner. From here on Portadown had no answer to David’s off spin as he ripped through the middle order to finish with figures of 5-40 in his 10 overs. Portadown’s innings closed on 169 in the 45th over when 16 year old Ross Boultwood picked up his first senior wicket bowling Hoey.

Saintfield captain Mark McBriar was happy to pick up the win in the first game. However he was also well aware that there is a lot more work to be done in a number of areas to ensure a successful season, starting at home to Ballymena this Saturday in the Senior Cup.
