Saintfield defeated Templepatrick
at The Demense on Saturday, thanks to two superb individual
performances. Firstly with the bat, South African Byron Woodruff
was at his destructive best as he smashed his way to his first
century for the club. Woodruff’s innings commenced in
the 30th over, after opener Clegg (43) was caught at point of
the bowling of Caldwell, with the score on 108. Woodruff wasted
no time and was soon hitting boundaries to all parts of the
ground, his unbeaten 114, included 6 x 6’s and 13 x 4’s.
He was well supported by the inform Tommy Stewart who was eventually
out on 65 and Ray McCavery who finished unbeaten on 34, as the
Saintfield innings closed on 270 for 2.
Saintfield’s bowlers struck early on as the ever reliable
Phillip Murray had Lutton (1) caught behind by 17 year old Craig
Boultwood. Next to go was J. Busby (17) again caught behind
this time of the bowling of Yeates. This was the start of a
superb and special spell of bowling from Yeates. The young fast
bowler was now bowling with great pace and bounce that troubled
each batsman that faced him and resulted in Yeates returning
career best figures of 10-2-32-6. In between the Yeates wickets
another young prospect, Matthew Norton who was making his debut,
picked up his first senior wicket when he trapped the dangerous
Campbell (19) leg before. Captain McBriar finished of proceedings
bowling Daly (5) as Templepatrick finished on 168 all out, giving
Saintfield a 102 run victory.
