Holywood 1st XI

Date: 11th June 2006 at The Demense
Toss Won By: Saintfield

In an enthralling encounter at The Demense on Sunday Saintfield defeated Section 3 title favourites Holywood by one run. Saintfield captain Mark McBriar won the toss and elected to bat on what was another glorious batting wicket.
Saintfield’s opening pair of Stewart and Clegg put on 20 for the first wicket before Stewart (11) was caught at backward point of the bowling of the pacy Phillip McCormick. Three overs later McCormick struck again in the exact same fashion and Woodruff (2) was back in the pavilion.
A determined Ray McCavery then joined Clegg and worked hard for there runs against some accurate Holywood bowling before Clegg (18) was trapped leg before by Shannon. At 48 for 3 Saintfield were in difficulty. Harrison joined McCavery and again this pair knuckled down and batted sensibly, although a little luck was required at times to maintain the partnership. Eventually McCavery (48) cut one into the hands of point off Gledhill’s bowling.
David (1) was run out and Mullan (2) played a terrible shot and was bowled as again Saintfield’s effort began to falter. Harrison however was showing maturity as he worked the ball around and into the gaps.
McBriar (12) and Geoff Brittain (13) gave him some support. Harrison brought up his first half century for the 1st XI in the 47th over and finished on 58 not out with Yeates 2 not out, as Saintfield closed their innings on 189 for 9.
Saintfield were determined that Holywood would have work for every run, however this was not how the case as early on some erratic bowling gave Holywood as many extras as they had scored runs.
The introduction of McBriar and spinner Noel David slowed things down. McBriar in particular caused the Holywood batsmen many problems as he beat the outside edge time after time; he was rewarded when McCormick (5) eventually managed to nick one to wicketkeeper Brittain.
Woodruff struck in consecutive deliveries first bowling Brannigan (18) and then trapping Maxwell (0) LBW. Saintfield knew now that they had a chance of causing an upset, however with opener Sharkey still at the crease Holywood were very much in the game. Eventually the pressure of the increasing run rate told and Sharkey (61) skied one of the bowling of David which Tommy Stewart held on to on the mid-wicket boundary. Entering the last few overs the tension was building and Holywood needed 34 of the last three overs. However they were in no mood to give in as Yeates went for 14 in the 48th over and Murray 13 in the 49th over. Holywood now required 7 of 6 balls, Yeates however proved too much for them as he cart-wheeled Cardy’s middle stump in the second ball and conceded 5 runs to give Saintfield a one run victory.
