Saintfield
1st XI Match Report
.v.
Holywood 1st XI
Date:
22nd July 2006 at Seapark
Toss Won By: Saintfield
Saintfield travelled to Seapark
on Saturday to play Holywood and put in an excellent all-round
team performance to come away with a victory, in what was a
tense and at times heated affair.
Saints skipper Mark McBriar
won the toss and elected to bat on what was a good wicket with
a quick outfield. From the off openers Maurice Clegg and 17
year old Gareth Harrison went about their task in a determined
fashion and raced to 20 off the first six overs. After a quick
opening spell from Nixon and McCormick, Holywood introduced
the medium pace of both Cardy and Belford. Both these bowled
a superb line and length and made it difficult to score runs.
However Saintfield knew that if they could keep wickets in hand
there was plenty of batting lower down to enable a good total
to be posted.
With the score on 43 Clegg (18)
was bowled by a good delivery from Belford. This brought the
in form Ray McCavery, fresh from his 99no the previous week,
McCavery again showed his quality and he set himself up for
a long stay at the wicket. Together with Harrison this pair
took the score to 147, before Harrison (43) was caught in the
covers by Gledhill. With seven overs remaining McBriar sent
in Saintfield’s player-coach Noel David in an attempt
to up the run rate. David did not disappoint as he smashed Holywood
to all parts blasting 32 off 16 balls, before eventually being
caught with the score on 182. This brought a few quick wickets
as Saintfield attempted to pile on the runs Wheeler (0) and
Woodruff (8) came and went before McCavery was run out for a
splendid 76. McBriar (7no) and Paul Mullan (7no) brought the
innings to a close with Saintfield finishing up with a respectable
215 for 6 off their 50 overs.
Saintfield knew at tea the job
was only half done and that the bowlers would be required to
apply the same attitude and determination as the batsmen. Holywood
got off to an impressive start with Australian Gledhill racing
to 50 as they reached 75 for 1 after 15 overs, the only casualty
being McMaster run out by Harrison. With Phillip McCormick and
Gledhill at the wicket the game was in the balance.
McBriar introduced John Wheeler
in the 16th over and the big man, determined to make amends
for his first ever golden duck, struck immediately having Gledhill
(50) caught behind by young Craig Boultwood. With Gledhill gone
and the introduction of David’s off spin, Holywood’s
run rate slowed up. David bowled McCormick (25) with the score
on 93 as Holywood rocked. However they regained a foothold before
Murray trapped Branagan (22) leg before with score on 119. Man
of the match Gareth Harrison then struck twice in quick succession
to remove Shaw (17) lbw and then had Wood (1) caught in the
covers by David diving full length to his left, as Holywood
slumped to 129 for 6. A late stand between Nixon (19no) and
Cardy (14) brought their score to 177, however pace man Mark
Yeates returned to land the knock out blow and picked the last
two wickets as Holywood closed on 182, 33 runs short.
This
victory was vital as Saintfield look to progress through Section
3, however with big games to come against local rivals Dundrum
and Drumaness, as well as teams scrapping for survival, Saintfield
are aware there is a lot of cricket left to play this season.
