Saintfield
progressed to the second round of the Junior Cup with a comprehensive
victory over the newly formed Belfast International. Winning
the toss Saintfield captain Mark McBriar elected to bat, openers
Clegg and Wheeler put on 48 before Wheeler(20) was bowled by
Braveen. Clegg then strugled to find a partner to occupt the
crease with him as the middle order of Stewart(9), McCavery(3)
and Mullan(5) all went cheaply. When South Africian Byron Woodruff
joined Clegg Saintfield were struggling on 89 for 4. However
Woodruff and Clegg steadied the ship before Clegg(67) was bowled
by Braveen with the score on 138. Woodruff(25) and a late flourish
from Phillip Murray(18) took Saintfield onto 202 all out in
the 48th over.
Saintfield's bowlers attacked Belfast International right from
the off, with McBriar striking twice in the first ten overs.
The introduction of Yeates(2 for 17)and Woodruff(3 for 19) decimated
the Belfast International middle order and
really the visitors were never going to threaten the Saintfield
score. It was left to John Wheeler(1 for 2) and Phillip Murray(1
for 15) to finish off the Belfast International challenge and
give Saintfield a comfortable 121 run victory.
