Saintfield
travelled to Templepatrick on Saturday a fixture for which they
have reserved some of their worst performances over the years,
however on Saturday an efficient bowling performance saw them
restrict Templepatrick to 116 all out from 48 overs.
The star of the show for the Saintfield in the field was South
African Byron Woodruff, not only did Woodruff pick up 5-31 in
9 overs he also fielded with a sharpness that resulted in him
running out two batsmen. However Woodruff’s wickets owed
a lot to a 20 over spell from John Wheeler and Noel David. Wheeler
returned miserly figures of 10-4-8-0 while David’s figures
were nearly as economic 10-5-12-1. This tight spell really put
Saintfield in charge and Woodruff capitalized ensuring he bowled
accurately at stage when Templepatrick had to try to score runs.
On a difficult wicket Saintfield skipper sent his batsmen out
instructing them to be patient and wait for the bad ball. Early
on openers Clegg and Harrison had no option as Templepatrick’s
bowlers maintained a good line and length. However they did
punish the bad ball when it came with Clegg hitting two delightful
sixes and Harrison a couple of lovely fours through the off
side. Clegg (30) departed bowled by Wilson with the score on
45. Ray McCavery joined Harrison and this pair continued to
score at a good rate before Harrison was bowled by Smith for
a well crafted 35. Wheeler 3 not out and McCavery 30 not out
finished the job as Saintfield passed Templepatrick’s
score in the 30th over.
