Dundrum 1st XI
Junior Cup 2nd Round

Date: 27th May 2006 at The Demense
Toss Won By: Dundrum

The second round of the Junior Cup pitted local rivals Saintfield and Dundrum together at The Demense on Saturday. It was a game that appeared destined for a bowl out given the weather; however there was a determination within both camps to play the match, that plus the hard work of groundsman William Radcliffe ensured the game went ahead and the lottery of a bowl out did not materialise.

Dundrum captain Rodney Hassard won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Joel Maguire and Gavin McNerlin made slow and steady progress against the Saintfield bowlers of McBriar and Murray. Murray bowled an extremely tight spell with only 13 runs coming from his ten overs that included five maidens. However it was Saintfield’s first change bowlers that surprised the Dundrum batsmen. Firstly the pace of 17 year old Mark Yeates accounted for the father and son pairing of Noel and Joel Maguire in consecutive deliveries. In Yeates first over he clipped the top of Joel’s off stump before having his father Noel caught behind by Boultwood first ball. The introduction of John Wheeler also led to more Dundrum batsmen returning to the pavilion. Wheeler also struck in consecutive deliveries to remove Kenny McNerlin and then Glover as Dundrum struggled. Only Gavin McNerlin put up any real resistance and had reached 37 before taking a rush of blood to the head and skying one which Yeates held on the long off boundary off the bowling of South African Byron Woodruff. Dean Gordon then became the third Saintfield bowler to find himself on a hat trick ball when in his first over he had Gibson caught by McCavery in the covers and next delivery trapped the dangerous Lee Connor LBW, leaving Dundrum on 84 for 9. The last pairing of Reilly and Richard McNerlin took the score 102 before Gordon bowled Richard McNerlin with a clever slower ball.

At tea Saintfield knew that Dundrum would give their all in an attempt to get a few early wickets, however Saintfield’s opening pair of Clegg and Wheeler were in no mood to give their wicket cheaply. Both batted with a determination and application that skipper Mark McBriar had requested, and when Wheeler (25) was bowled with the score already on 54, Saintfield knew one final push would see them home. Clegg (31) was trapped LBW by Jeff Maguire, with the score on 82, before Tommy Stewart (14no) and Ray McCavery (13no) guided Saintfield home to a splendid eight wicket victory.

This was a good all round team performance from Saintfield and will hopefully provide a platform for good league campaign. Firstly though this Saturday they will entertain East Belfast at The Demense in the quarter final of cup and again a top performance will be required from all as the competition for places heats up.
