Dundrum 1st XI

Date: 17th June 2006 at The Demense
Toss Won By: Dundrum

Dundrum travelled to The Demense on Saturday keen to preserve their unbeaten record in Section 3, Saintfield on the other hand knew that they needed to win to keep their hopes alive of challenging for the title. Dundrum skipper, Rodney Hassard, won the toss and somewhat surprisingly elected to field.
However this decision appeared to be justified as in the first seven overs Saintfield could only manage one run, courtesy of a wide! With Lee Connor and Darren McCann bowling a tight line and length Saintfield's opening pair of Wheeler and Clegg struggled. Clegg (0) was eventually trapped leg before by McCann in the sixth over. This brought a catalogue of wickets Tommy Stewart (1) was next to go bowled by Connor, Woodruff (4) played on off the bowling of Shilliday, he was shortly followed by Wheeler (8) who was caught by Hassard in the covers of the bowling of McCann. At 17 for 4 Saintfield were in serious trouble. David joined McCavery and both steadied the ship and added a few runs before McCavery (11) was caught by Bailey in the gully off the bowling of Joel Maguire. Paul Mullan joined David with the score on 39 for 5 in the 19th over. Mullan and David batted sensibly before David (44) skied one of Hassard's bowling which Joel Maguire held onto at gully. Boultwood (2) was caught a by Derrick McCann off his brother Darren's bowling and Mark McBriar was caught and bowled by Lee Connor. Mullan (28) was next to go following a steady innings, run out by a Joel Maguire direct hit (although if the 3rd umpire had been available it may have proved an interesting decision!!!). Murray and Yeates added 15 for the last wicket before Murray was bowled and Saintfield finished on a disappointing 127 all out in the 43rd over.
At tea Dundrum were hot favourites, however Saintfield were determined to make them fight all the way. Saints skipper Mark McBriar led the way removing Bailey (0) in the second over; in the fourth over he produced a great Yorker which bowled Joel Maguire. Darren McCann (11) and Hassard then carried the Dundrum innings forward before Mark Yeates clipped the top of McCann’s off stump with an outstanding delivery that nipped back. Saintfield's young wicketkeeper Craig Boultwood then produced a magnificent stumping off the bowling of Wheeler to get rid of Hassard (28). This brought Lee Connor and Derrick McCann to crease this pair took the score to 90 for 4 and it looked like Saintfield's chance had gone. However when Woodruff had Connor (21) caught by Murray at mid wicket and Noel David caught and bowled McCann, Saintfield regained belief. Woodruff ripped through the Dundrum tail to finish with figures of 5.4-1-20-4 as Dundrum fell 24 runs short.
