Academy 1st XI

Date: 23rd July 2006 at The Demense
Toss Won By: Academy

Following victory against Holywood on Saturday Saintfield were determined to let all the good work go to waste when they entertained Academy at The Demense on Sunday. Academy won the toss and elected to bat on another magnificent Saintfield wicket.

If Saintfield had been on the ball on Saturday they were certainly very slow to start on Sunday, captain Mark McBriar reflected afterwards that “The first ten overs was probably our worst spell of all round play this season.” By that stage Academy had raced to 43 without loss and opener Shields was smashing the Saintfield bowling attack all round the ground. Eventually in the 13th over breakthrough man John Wheeler trapped Sloan (11) leg before. Wheeler was at again in his 4th, 5th and 6th overs removing Kelso (1) leg before, bowling the dangerous David Greenless (4) and finally having opener Shields (55) caught at long on by Paul Mullan. Not wanting to be out done Byron Woodruff got in on the act trapping P. Riddell lbw first ball as Academy slumped from 69 for 1 to 79 for 5. G. Riddell and McCauley put on a short stand striking a few nice boundaries before Woodruff again struck to remove McCauley (16) caught at mid-wicket by Harrison with the score on 107 for 6. Herman was bowled round his legs attempting to sweep spinner Noel David as wickets began to fall at regular intervals. The final wicket fell as Brian Boyd skied one to mid-wicket off the bowling of Noel David, Woodruff sprinted fully 30 yards and diving full length took as good a catch as The Demense has seen for many a year, as Academy finished on 139 all out in the 43rd over.

Saintfield’s opening pair of Harrison and Clegg again got the innings off to a good start with Harrison striking three delightful boundaries, before he got one that bounced a little and he was caught by P.Riddell, for 12. Clegg working hard was joined by Wheeler keen to regain his early season form. This pair took the score to 59 before Clegg (31) was caught by Boyd of the bowling of P. Riddell. Wheeler was then joined by Phillip Murray batting well up the order as captain Mark McBriar juggled his batting line up a little. Murray did not disappoint his captain as he hit a quick fire 17, including one delightful six into the factory, before finally going for one big shot too many and being caught on the boundary by Herman of Boyd’s bowling. Boultwood (5) was trapped leg before with the score on 129. It was left to Mark Yeates (7no), including an excellent cover drive and a textbook late cut for four, and John Wheeler, who finished on 50 not out to steer Saintfield home in the 31st over, and give them a comfortable 6 wicket victory.
